What it is
A gentle party for train-loving toddlers and preschoolers. A big wooden railway, a pretend train ride with tickets, and singing. Short and sweet, with a train cake as the finale.
Plan ahead
- Two weeks before: borrow extra wooden track from friends (label it!). Print tickets.
- The day before: set up the track on a rug or play mat and line chairs up as train carriages.
Set the scene
A “Station” sign, a ticket office (a cardboard box with a window), a clock and red, blue and yellow balloons. Signal lights made from black card with red, amber and green circles.
Activities
Railway play zone
Children build and run trains together. Have plenty of engines so there are no queues.
All aboard
Children sit on chairs; the conductor punches tickets with a hole punch. Sing “The wheels on the train” and stop at “stations” (the kitchen, the garden) for a sticker.
Stop and go
Hold up green (chug around), amber (slow down) and red (stop) cards.
Food and drink
- Sandwiches cut with a train cutter
- Cheese “coal” (cubes) and veggie sticks
- Juice in little bottles
- A train cake: loaf cake carriages filled with sweets
Tips
- Keep it short: 90 minutes is plenty for under-4s.
- Have a few duplicate favourite engines to avoid tears.
On the day
- Arrival (15 min): each passenger gets a ticket and a conductor's hat.
- Railway play zone (20 min): build a wooden track with bridges and tunnels.
- All aboard (15 min): a train of chairs or boxes; the conductor punches tickets and everyone sings.
- Train games (15 min): 'stop and go' signals and a conga train.
- Station café (20 min).
- Train cake (10 min) and goodbye.
