What it could look like

What it is

A party built around plastic building bricks. Children compete in fast, funny building challenges, then work together on one big city. You can use bricks you already own; ask guests to bring a small bag each if you need more. No licensed theme required.

Plan ahead

  • Two weeks before: send invitations shaped like a brick (cut from card with circles for studs).
  • One week before: sort bricks into tubs by colour or type. Write challenge cards. Ask parents to label any bricks they bring.
  • The day before: set up tables with baseplates, a tub of bricks per team and a timer. Make awards on card.

Set the scene

Primary colours everywhere: red, yellow, blue and green balloons and table covers. Make big “bricks” from painted shoeboxes with paper cups glued on top as studs. Stack them as a welcome tower.

Activities

Speed build

Read a challenge, flip the sand timer and go. Ideas: “the tallest tower in 2 minutes”, “a creature with 6 legs”, “something that can float” (test it in a bowl of water), “a vehicle that rolls”. Award points for creativity, not just finishing.

Blind build

Pairs sit back to back. One has a small pre-made model and describes it (“take a red 2x4 and put a blue 2x2 on top on the left”). The other builds. Compare at the end - the results are funny.

Team city

Give each team a theme: houses, shops, a park, a fire station, an airport. All parts join together on the floor at the end. Take a photo of the finished city and email it to parents.

Food and drink

  • Brick-shaped sandwiches (square sandwiches with cucumber circle studs)
  • Jelly or chocolate bricks made in a brick mould
  • Rainbow fruit platter
  • A brick cake: rectangular cake with marshmallows or cupcakes on top as studs

Tips

  • Brick separators save fingernails and arguments.
  • Keep a “no smashing other people’s builds” rule.
  • Vacuum before and after - nobody wants to step on a brick.

On the day

  1. Arrival (15 min): free-build on the welcome mat while everyone arrives; each child gets a builder name tag.
  2. Speed build (15 min): three quick-fire challenges with a timer.
  3. Blind build (10 min): one teammate describes a model, the other builds it without looking.
  4. Snack break (15 min).
  5. Team city build (30 min): teams of 3-4 build part of a city on a shared baseplate.
  6. City tour and awards (10 min): every team wins an award like 'tallest' or 'most creative'.
  7. Cake (15 min).
