What it is
A school-disco-style party in a living room or hired hall. A playlist, a couple of disco lights and classic party games are all you need. A kids’ DJ can run it for bigger groups.
Plan ahead
- Two weeks before: book a hall or a DJ if you want one. Make a playlist of child-friendly hits.
- One week before: buy disco lights, glow sticks, a limbo set and wrap a pass-the-parcel.
- The day before: clear the room and test the lights and speaker.
Set the scene
A disco ball or LED light, balloons, a “dance floor” outlined in tape and a sparkly backdrop for photos.
Activities
- Musical statues and bumps: freeze or sit when the music stops.
- Limbo: lower the pole after each round.
- Copy the moves: the birthday child leads and everyone copies.
- Corners: name four corners after colours; when the music stops, one corner is called out.
- Pass the parcel: a small treat in every layer so everyone gets something.
Food and drink
- Party food boxes: sandwiches, crisps, mini sausages, fruit
- Squash and water
- A disco ball cake with silver sweets
Tips
- Give prizes for “best dancing” to several children.
- Keep a calm corner with books for anyone who needs a break.
On the day
