Racing car party
A chequered-flag party with cardboard box cars, a slot-car racetrack, a pit stop challenge and a podium.

What it is
A motor racing party. Kids build and decorate their own cardboard cars, race them on foot around the garden, then compete on a slot-car or remote-control track. Ends with a podium and medals.
Plan ahead
- Two weeks before: collect one box per child (big enough to stand in) and cut out the bottom. Add shoulder straps from ribbon.
- One week before: borrow or buy a slot-car track or a couple of remote-control cars. Order medals.
- The day before: mark a racetrack with tape or cones.
Set the scene
Chequered flag bunting, tyre stacks (black rubber rings or painted paper plates), a start-finish banner and a three-step podium from boxes.
Activities
Box car design
Paper plate wheels, numbers, stickers and paint. Write each driver’s name on the side.
Box car grand prix
Children “drive” their cars around the track. Heats of 4, then a final.
Pit stop challenge
Teams change a “tyre” (a hoop on a stick), refuel (pour water into a bottle) and clean the windscreen as fast as possible.
Time trials
Each driver gets three laps on the slot-car track; record the fastest lap.
Food and drink
- “Fuel” juice in petrol-can bottles
- Traffic light sandwiches (green, amber and red fillings)
- Chocolate tyres (doughnuts)
- A racetrack cake with toy cars
Tips
- Give every driver a medal and a “fastest lap” or “best car design” certificate.
On the day
- Driver registration (15 min): race numbers and a driver's licence for each child.
- Car design (25 min): decorate a cardboard box car with wheels and numbers.
- Box car grand prix (20 min): run a lap of the track wearing the box car.
- Pit stop (20 min): food and drink.
- Racetrack time trials (20 min): race on a slot-car or remote-control track.
- Podium and cake (15 min).
