What it is
A relaxed garden party built around a proper barbecue and a tasting flight of craft beers. Guests compare styles from lager to stout, and each beer is matched with something from the grill.
Plan ahead
- One week before: buy a mixed case of craft beers in four styles: lager or pilsner, pale ale or IPA, amber or red ale, stout or porter.
- The day before: rub and marinate the meat. Make coleslaw and pickles.
- On the day: start slow-cooked meats 6-8 hours ahead.
The flight
- Pilsner with grilled chicken wings.
- IPA with spicy sausages or jerk chicken.
- Amber ale with burgers.
- Stout with brisket or a chocolate brownie. Serve 100ml tasters in small glasses on a flight board.
Food and drink
- Pulled pork or brisket in buns, with slaw and pickles
- Corn on the cob, potato salad, grilled halloumi for vegetarians
- Alcohol-free craft beers and soft drinks
Tips
- Use a meat thermometer: pork shoulder pulls at about 93°C.
- Keep beers in a cool box with ice.
On the day
- Morning: start the smoker or barbecue for pulled pork or brisket.
- Arrival (30 min): first beer and garden games.
- Tasting flight (40 min): four beers from light to dark with tasting cards.
- BBQ feast (60 min).
- Garden games (40 min): cornhole and giant Jenga.
- Dessert and the beer vote (20 min).
