What it is

A relaxed picnic where friends and family guess the baby’s sex before a simple reveal. Keep the reveal safe and low-key: a balloon box, a cake with coloured filling, or paper confetti poppers. No fireworks, smoke bombs or anything that can start a fire.

Plan ahead

  • Two weeks before: pick a park or garden and invite guests.
  • One week before: give the sealed scan result to a trusted friend or the baker. They prepare the reveal so the parents are surprised too.
  • The day before: buy picnic food and decorations.

Reveal ideas (safe options)

  • Balloon box: a big cardboard box filled with pink or blue balloons that float out when opened.
  • Cake: a white-iced cake with pink or blue sponge or sweets inside.
  • Confetti poppers: paper confetti in the colour, popped by the parents.
  • Piñata: filled with coloured sweets or confetti.

Set the scene

Picnic blankets, cushions, a bunting with “He or She?” and a voting board. Put balloons in both colours and a neutral one (white or gold) around the space.

Games

  • Old wives’ tales: carrying high or low, craving sweet or salty? Guests make predictions based on the myths.
  • Guess the date and weight: guests write their guesses on a card; save them for after the birth.
  • Vote count: tally the stickers before the big reveal.

Food and drink

  • Sandwiches, quiches, sausage rolls and salads
  • Pink and blue cupcakes
  • Lemonade with pink and blue ice cubes (fruit juice frozen in ice trays)

Tips

  • Avoid pyrotechnics and smoke - they have caused wildfires and injuries.
  • Ask a friend to film the parents’ reaction.
  • Some families prefer a “baby sprinkle” without a reveal - both are lovely.

On the day

  1. 1:00pm Arrival: guests vote by taking a pink or blue sticker (or a bracelet).
  2. 1:15pm Picnic lunch.
  3. 2:00pm Games: old wives' tales quiz and the vote count.
  4. 2:30pm The reveal: open the balloon box, cut the cake or pop confetti cannons.
  5. 2:40pm Photos, cake and celebrations.
