What it is

A skating session at a permanent rink or a seasonal outdoor Christmas rink. Many rinks have party packages with skate hire, a host and food. Penguin-shaped skate aids help little ones and beginners.

Plan ahead

  • Four weeks before: book a slot - seasonal rinks sell out around Christmas.
  • Two weeks before: collect shoe sizes for skate hire and remind guests that gloves are often compulsory.
  • The day before: pack plasters, spare gloves and socks.

On the ice

  • Beginners: hold the side or a skate aid, take small “penguin steps”, bend the knees.
  • If you fall: get onto hands and knees, put one foot flat, then the other, and stand up slowly.
  • Games: follow the leader, and freeze when the music stops.

Food and drink

  • Hot chocolate with marshmallows
  • Rink cafĂ© food or a picnic afterwards
  • Cupcakes with snowflake toppers

Tips

  • Helmets for children.
  • Thick socks but not too thick - skates should fit snugly.

On the day

  1. Arrival (20 min): skate hire, helmets and gloves on.
  2. Skate session (60 min): beginners with skate aids, confident skaters free skating.
  3. Skate games (15 min): follow the leader and 'statues' on ice.
  4. Hot chocolate and food (30 min) at the rink café.
  5. Cake (10 min).
