What it is

The classic spring party. Eggs are hidden around the garden, children hunt with baskets, and a golden egg adds excitement. Using fillable plastic eggs lets you share out chocolate fairly (and include non-chocolate treats).

Plan ahead

  • One week before: buy fillable eggs, chocolate, baskets and bunny ears. Fill eggs with chocolate, stickers or small toys.
  • The morning of: hide eggs. Use different colours for different age groups (low and easy for toddlers, tricky for older kids).

Hunt ideas

  • Colour coding: “Toddlers find yellow eggs, older kids find blue.”
  • Clue trail: older children follow rhyming clues to a hidden basket.
  • Footprints: chalk bunny prints leading from a “rabbit hole”.
  • Golden egg: one gold egg with a special prize.

Food and drink

  • Hot cross buns, mini eggs and simnel cake
  • Carrot sticks and dip
  • Bunny-shaped sandwiches
  • Juice and tea

Tips

  • Count the eggs you hide so none are left melting in the garden.
  • Keep a spare bag of eggs for anyone who finds fewer.

On the day

  1. Arrival (15 min): each child gets a basket and bunny ears.
  2. Bunny footprint trail (5 min): follow chalk prints into the garden.
  3. Egg hunt (25 min): colour-coded eggs by age so everyone finds their share.
  4. Golden egg (5 min): one special egg wins a big prize.
  5. Easter crafts (20 min): decorate a paper bunny or egg card.
  6. Easter tea (25 min): hot cross buns and treats.
