What it could look like
What it is
A colourful Easter craft session for families. Hard-boiled eggs (or wooden eggs for keeping) are dyed, painted, marbled and glittered. A branch in a vase becomes an Easter tree for display.
Plan ahead
- The day before: hard-boil eggs (two or three per guest) and cool them. Buy wooden eggs if you want keepsakes.
- On the day: set up dye cups and cover tables.
Techniques
- Dye bath: hot water, a tablespoon of vinegar and food colouring in a cup. Dip for 5 minutes.
- Rubber band stripes: wrap bands around the egg before dyeing.
- Marbling: spread shaving foam in a tray, drop colours on top, swirl with a skewer, roll the egg through, wait 10 minutes and wipe off.
- Paint pens and stickers: for faces and patterns.
Food and drink
- Egg and cress sandwiches (using the cracked eggs!)
- Hot cross buns
- Chocolate nests
Tips
- Use wooden eggs with paint pens for young children - no breakages.
- Eat dyed eggs within a day if they’ve been out of the fridge.
On the day
- Arrival (10 min): aprons and an egg box each.
- Dyeing station (25 min): dip eggs in food-colour dye baths.
- Painting and stickers (25 min).
- Snack break (20 min).
- Marbling (20 min): swirl eggs in shaving foam with colours.
- Easter tree (10 min): hang decorated wooden eggs on a branch.
