What it is
A festive craft evening where everyone makes a fresh Christmas wreath to hang on their door. Fresh foliage smells wonderful, and wreaths last for weeks outside.
Plan ahead
- Two weeks before: buy wire rings, sphagnum moss (or a moss-ready kit), reel wire, secateurs and decorations.
- Three days before: gather or buy foliage: Nordmann fir, blue pine, eucalyptus, ivy, holly. About a carrier bag full per wreath.
- The day before: dry orange slices (oven at 100°C for 2-3 hours).
How to make it
- Moss base: pack moss tightly onto the ring and bind it with reel wire.
- Bundles: make small hand-sized bundles of 3-4 mixed sprigs.
- Bind: lay a bundle on the ring and wrap wire round the stems twice. Lay the next bundle over the stems of the last, all the same direction, and keep going round.
- Decorate: push wire through dried oranges, cinnamon bundles and pine cones and twist into the moss.
- Ribbon: tie a big velvet bow and a hanging loop.
Food and drink
- Mulled wine and mulled apple juice
- Mince pies and cheese straws
Tips
- Gloves for holly and spruce.
- Mist the wreath with water every few days to keep it fresh.
On the day
- Arrival (20 min): mulled wine and mince pies.
- Demo (15 min): how to bundle and bind foliage.
- Base layer (40 min): bind bundles of pine and fir all round the ring.
- Break (15 min).
- Decorate (40 min): wire on dried oranges, cinnamon, pine cones and berries.
- Ribbon and hang (15 min).
