What it is

A pastel, sparkly party with crafts that become party bags. Kids make unicorn horns, hunt for rainbows and make a glittery slime known (to great delight) as unicorn poop. Easy to run and very photogenic.

Plan ahead

  • Two weeks before: send pastel invitations and suggest guests wear something sparkly.
  • One week before: buy plain headbands, card horns (or a kit), felt flowers, pom-poms in rainbow colours, PVA glue, and a pastel balloon garland kit.
  • The day before: bake a rainbow layer cake (six thin coloured layers) and cover it in white icing so the colours are a surprise. Draw a large unicorn on card for pin the horn.

Set the scene

A pastel balloon arch over the food table, a rainbow of streamers, and paper clouds. Put a sparkly cushion “throne” in a corner with a rainbow backdrop for photos.

Activities

Unicorn headbands

Pre-cut card horns, roll them into cones and staple them. Kids wrap the horns in glitter tape or ribbon and glue felt ears and flowers onto headbands. Hot glue the horns on for them.

Rainbow hunt

Hide 10 pom-poms of each colour. Each child collects them and drops them into the matching coloured cup on the rainbow chart. Count together at the end.

Unicorn poop slime

Same as basic slime (PVA glue, baking soda, contact lens solution) but swirl two pastel colours and lots of glitter. Pack it in a jar labelled “Unicorn Poop”.

Food and drink

  • Rainbow fruit skewers (strawberry, orange, pineapple, kiwi, blueberry, grape)
  • Unicorn popcorn: popcorn drizzled with melted pastel candy melts and sprinkles
  • Fairy bread (buttered bread with sprinkles)
  • Pink milk or pastel lemonade
  • The rainbow layer cake with a gold card horn on top

Tips

  • Glitter gets everywhere. Use a tray per child and accept it.
  • For 3-year-olds, swap slime for a sticker sheet - slime goes in mouths.

On the day

  1. Arrival (15 min): each child makes a unicorn headband with a glittery horn and flower ears.
  2. Rainbow hunt (15 min): find hidden coloured pom-poms around the room and sort them into the rainbow.
  3. Pin the horn on the unicorn (10 min).
  4. Unicorn freeze dance (10 min): dance to music and freeze when it stops, in a unicorn pose.
  5. Rainbow food (25 min).
  6. Rainbow cake reveal (10 min): cut the plain white cake to reveal the rainbow layers.
  7. Unicorn poop slime (20 min): make glittery slime to take home.
