What it could look like
What it is
A pony party company brings one or two calm ponies and experienced handlers. Every child gets led rides and a chance to groom and feed them. It feels very special and needs little organising beyond the booking.
Plan ahead
- Six weeks before: book a pony party company. Check insurance, riding hats, weight limits and how much space they need (a flat lawn or field).
- Two weeks before: tell parents children should wear trousers and closed shoes.
- The day before: clear the riding area and set up a shady waiting area.
Set the scene
Hay bales, bunting, a “Pony Club” sign, rosettes for each guest and a bucket of carrots for the ponies (with the handler’s permission).
Activities
Grooming
Handlers show children how to brush a pony’s coat and mane. Calm and gentle.
Pony rides
Each child rides with a handler leading. Give everyone two turns.
Hobby horse race and horseshoe hunt
Children waiting race on hobby horses over little jumps, or search for horseshoes (painted card) hidden in the garden.
Rosette ceremony
Every child gets a rosette: “Best rider”, “Kindest to the pony”, “Best grooming”.
Food and drink
- Carrot and cucumber sticks with dip
- Horseshoe sandwiches
- Apple juice
- A pony cake or horseshoe cupcakes
