What it is

A green-fingered party where guests swap plants and cuttings, so everyone goes home with something new. Perfect for a housewarming - the new home gets a jungle - or a plant-lover’s birthday.

Plan ahead

  • Two weeks before: ask guests to bring 1-3 plants or cuttings, labelled with the name and care tips.
  • One week before: buy small pots, compost and labels for the repotting bar.
  • The day before: take your own cuttings to share.

How the swap works

  1. Everyone puts plants on the swap table.
  2. Draw numbers to decide order.
  3. Take turns choosing one plant until all are gone.

Easy plants to propagate

Pothos, spider plants, tradescantia, succulents and snake plants. Cut below a node, put in water, and roots appear in 2-4 weeks.

Food and drink

  • Green-themed food: pesto pasta salad, guacamole, cucumber sandwiches
  • Herbal iced tea and lemonade

Tips

  • Lay newspaper under the repotting bar.
  • Have a “plant doctor” table for sick plant advice.

On the day

  1. Arrival (20 min): guests label their plants and cuttings and put them on the swap table.
  2. Browsing (20 min) with drinks.
  3. Swap rounds (30 min): draw numbers and take turns choosing.
  4. Repotting bar (40 min): pot up new plants with compost and decorated pots.
  5. Plant care tips (20 min): propagation demo.
