What it is

A relaxed summer party for a team: outdoor games, a barbecue and ice cream. Mixed teams help people meet colleagues from other departments, and it’s inclusive for non-drinkers.

Plan ahead

  • Six weeks before: book a venue (a park area with permission, a garden venue or a sports club) and catering.
  • Three weeks before: send invitations and dietary forms.
  • One week before: plan teams and buy prizes.

Games

  • Egg-and-spoon and sack races
  • Tug of war
  • Welly throw
  • Giant Jenga and Connect 4
  • A team quiz in the shade for those who’d rather not run

Food and drink

  • Barbecue with meat, vegetarian and vegan options
  • Salads and corn on the cob
  • An ice cream van
  • Beer, wine, soft drinks and plenty of water

Tips

  • Have shade, sunscreen and a wet-weather plan.
  • Keep games optional and fun.

On the day

  1. 2:00pm Arrival and team draw: everyone is put in a mixed-department team.
  2. 2:30pm Sports day games: egg-and-spoon, tug of war, giant Jenga, welly throw.
  3. 3:30pm Barbecue and drinks.
  4. 4:30pm Ice cream van arrives.
  5. 5:00pm Team prizes and a thank-you from leadership.
