Ninja warrior party

What it is

An obstacle course challenge inspired by TV ninja shows. Children train like ninjas, then race through a course in the garden. Finish with a belt ceremony so every child wins.

Plan ahead

• Two weeks before: buy or borrow a ninja line or slackline kit, cones, hoops and a balance beam.
• The day before: build and test the course. Make sure every obstacle is low and safe.

The obstacle course

1. Agility ladder: quick feet through each square.
2. Hoop jumps: jump into each hoop.
3. Balance beam: a plank on the grass.
4. Tunnel crawl.
5. Ninja line: swing along the hanging rings (low enough for feet to touch).
6. Bell tap: jump up and ring a bell to finish.

Ninja tests

• Sleeping master: an adult sits blindfolded; ninjas sneak up to take a treat. If the master hears and points, they go back.
• Laser maze: string or crepe paper criss-crossing a hallway; get through without touching.

Food and drink

• Sushi-style sandwich rolls
• “Throwing stars” (star-shaped cheese)
• Water and juice
• A black-belt cake

Tips

• One adult at the ninja line at all times.
• Give everyone a “personal best” so it isn’t just about the fastest.
