Fairy garden party

What it is

The garden becomes an enchanted fairy glen. Children hunt for hidden fairy doors, plant their own mini fairy garden to take home and eat a fairy feast. Gentle and magical for younger children.

Plan ahead

• Two weeks before: buy wings, wands or wand kits, small pots, compost, moss and mini fairy accessories.
• The day before: hide 5-6 tiny fairy doors at the base of trees and walls, with a clue or a sparkly gem at each.

Set the scene

Fairy lights in bushes, gauzy fabric draped over a low table, paper toadstools (red paper plates with white dots on cardboard tubes) and flower garlands. A “Fairy Garden” sign at the gate.

Activities

Fairy door hunt

Each door has a gem and a rhyming clue to the next. The final door has a note from the fairy queen and a bag of fairy dust (glitter) for each child.

Mini fairy gardens

Each child fills a pot with compost, adds moss, a small plant, pebbles for a path and a tiny house or toadstool. Label pots with names.

Ribbon dance

Ribbon wands and floaty music. Copy the leader: twirl, flutter, sleep like a fairy and wake up.

Food and drink

• Fairy bread (sprinkles on buttered bread)
• Flower-shaped sandwiches and berries
• “Dew drop” grapes and pink lemonade
• A toadstool cake

Tips

• Use eco-friendly biodegradable glitter outdoors.
• Have spare wings for siblings.
