What it is

A low-key dinner the night before the wedding for the wedding party, close family and guests who have travelled. A barbecue keeps it casual and helps everyone relax before the big day.

Plan ahead

  • Six weeks before: decide the guest list and send invitations.
  • Two weeks before: plan the menu and decide if you’ll grill yourself or hire a barbecue caterer. Buy thank-you gifts for the wedding party.
  • The day before: marinate meat, make salads, and set up tables.

Set the scene

Picnic tables with check tablecloths, mason jars of wildflowers, festoon lights, and a sign with the couple’s names. Cool boxes of drinks, and a fire pit area with blankets.

Activities

Lawn games

Cornhole, giant Jenga and croquet keep guests mixing, and are good for kids.

Toasts

Usually from the hosts (traditionally the groom’s parents), plus anyone who isn’t speaking at the wedding. Keep them to 2-3 minutes each.

Thank-you gifts

The couple give gifts to the best man, bridesmaids, parents and anyone who helped.

Food and drink

  • Burgers, sausages, chicken skewers, grilled halloumi and veggie skewers
  • Corn on the cob, coleslaw, potato salad and a green salad
  • S’mores and a cake or fruit pie
  • Beer, wine, lemonade and iced tea

Tips

  • Finish early so the couple and wedding party get a good night’s sleep.
  • Have a wet-weather option, like a marquee or a garage space.

On the day

  1. 6:00pm Guests arrive after the rehearsal: cold drinks and lawn games.
  2. 6:45pm Barbecue is served.
  3. 7:45pm Toasts and stories (keep them shorter than the wedding speeches).
  4. 8:15pm Thank-you gifts to the wedding party and parents.
  5. 8:30pm S'mores at the fire pit and an early night.
