What it is

A living-room karaoke night with a proper “stage”. All you need is a TV or laptop for lyrics (free karaoke videos online), a mic and a speaker. Song-challenge cards and an awards show at the end keep it fun even for people who say they can’t sing.

Plan ahead

  • One week before: ask guests to send two songs each in advance and build a playlist so there is no searching mid-party.
  • A few days before: buy or borrow a wireless karaoke mic that pairs with a speaker, a disco light and a fringe curtain.
  • The day before: test the sound. Turn off the TV’s motion smoothing so lyrics don’t lag.

Set the scene

Hang a metallic fringe curtain behind the “stage” area. Put a disco ball or LED lights pointed at it. Put chairs or cushions in rows facing the stage, and a sign-up whiteboard by the door.

Activities

Sign-up board

Guests write their name and song. A host (the birthday person or a friend) calls each act up like a TV presenter.

Challenge cards

Write 15-20 cards: “sing in a whisper”, “add a dance move every chorus”, “sing it to someone in the room”, “duet with the person on your left”, “sing it as a cowboy”. Draw one before each song in the challenge round.

Awards show

Print or buy small trophies. Categories: “Best vocals”, “Best dance moves”, “Most dramatic”, “Bravest performance”, “Best duet”. Guests vote by applause or on paper.

Food and drink

  • Pizza or a nacho bar
  • Throat-friendly drinks: warm honey and lemon “for the vocal cords” as a joke, plus fizzy drinks
  • Popcorn and sweets for the audience

Tips

  • Keep the volume sensible and tell the neighbours.
  • Have a group song ready for whenever the energy drops.
  • For New Year’s Eve, finish with everyone singing at midnight.

On the day

  1. Arrival (20 min): drinks and snacks while guests write their song requests on the sign-up board.
  2. Warm-up round (20 min): group singalongs everyone knows, to break the ice.
  3. Solo and duet slots (60 min): work through the sign-up board; everyone gets at least one turn.
  4. Food break (20 min).
  5. Challenge round (30 min): draw cards like 'sing it as an opera singer' or 'swap the lyrics'.
  6. Awards show (10 min): trophies for best performance, best dance moves and bravest singer.
