What it is

A society-style golf day for a birthday, retirement, stag or work event. A “scramble” format lets beginners and good golfers play together: everyone tees off, the team picks the best shot and all play from there.

Plan ahead

  • Two to three months before: book a society day package at a golf club (usually includes golf, breakfast and dinner).
  • One month before: ask everyone their handicap or ability and make balanced teams.
  • One week before: order prizes, personalised balls and a scorecard summary.

Formats

  • Texas scramble: all tee off, choose the best ball, all play from there.
  • Stableford: points per hole based on handicap - good for mixed abilities.

Competitions

  • Nearest the pin on a par 3
  • Longest drive on a straight par 4 or 5
  • Booby prize for the worst score

Food and drink

  • Bacon rolls and coffee at breakfast
  • Halfway snacks and drinks
  • Clubhouse dinner

Tips

  • Hire clubs for non-golfers or add a putting competition for them.
  • Check the dress code.

On the day

  1. Morning: breakfast at the clubhouse and team draw.
  2. Shotgun start or tee times: teams of four play a scramble.
  3. On-course competitions: nearest the pin and longest drive.
  4. Halfway hut: snacks and drinks.
  5. Afternoon: scores in, then dinner and prize-giving.
