What it could look like

Example of a cupcake decorating wars set up for real
An example of how a cupcake decorating wars could look on the day.

What it is

A baking competition like the ones on TV, but without the oven stress: the cupcakes are baked in advance and the party is all about decorating. Teams compete over three rounds, judged by adults on taste, looks and creativity.

Plan ahead

  • Two weeks before: send invitations styled as contest entry forms.
  • One week before: buy aprons, piping bags, sprinkles, sweets and boxes.
  • The day before: bake 8-10 plain cupcakes per team (vanilla and chocolate). Make buttercream in 3-4 colours and refrigerate it. Pack the mystery boxes.

Set the scene

Each team gets a “station”: a section of table with a tray, bowls of toppings, piping bags, a spatula and a team name card. Hang bunting. Put a timer on a screen and play upbeat music. Set a judges’ table with score cards.

Activities

Round 1 - Classic

Teams pipe buttercream swirls and add sprinkles. Show them how first: hold the bag straight, start on the outside, spiral in, release pressure, lift.

Round 2 - Mystery box

Each box contains the same unexpected items: mini marshmallows, pretzels, jelly sweets, a tube of writing icing and something odd like popcorn. Teams must use at least three items.

Round 3 - Showstopper

Draw themes from a hat: “under the sea”, “jungle”, “outer space”, “a garden”. Teams arrange cupcakes on a stand to tell the theme’s story.

Judging

Judges score each round out of 10 for looks, creativity and teamwork. Give out awards so every team wins something: “best design”, “most creative”, “best team”, “messiest station”.

Food and drink

  • Savoury snacks to balance the sugar: pizza slices, cheese and crackers, veggie sticks
  • Lemonade and water
  • The birthday child’s cupcake tower doubles as the cake

Tips

  • Fill piping bags only half full; small hands squeeze harder than you think.
  • Check allergies and make a nut-free, egg-free batch if needed.
  • Cover the floor; sprinkles roll.

On the day

  1. Arrival (10 min): aprons and chef hats on, teams of 2-3 are formed.
  2. Round 1 - Classic (20 min): decorate 4 cupcakes with buttercream and sprinkles.
  3. Round 2 - Mystery box (20 min): each team gets a box of surprise ingredients to use.
  4. Snack break (15 min) while judges taste and score.
  5. Round 3 - Showstopper (30 min): build a cupcake tower around a theme drawn from a hat.
  6. Results (10 min): judges award trophies; every team wins a category.
  7. Pack up (10 min): each chef boxes their cupcakes to take home.
